  • Laurie Carey Testimonial 60 day

I am 40 years old, have PCOS, Insulin Resistance and a Hypothyroid and have found it impossible to lose any weight. In fact, I can’t stop gaining weight. In the last 6 years, since being diagnosed with a Hypothyroid, I had put on 97 pounds. That’s about 16 pounds a year! Naturally, I have tried different diets and exercise plans including the Paleo diet and a CrossFit boot camp with no success. After watching Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, a documentary about a man who reversed his health and lost 90 pounds juicing for 60 days, I decided I wanted to try a long-term juice cleanse.

Having learned quite a bit about nutrition during my research, I decided the juice should be cold-pressed, stored in glass bottles and should contain a variety superfoods for maximum nutrition. I also work full-time, so I realized I would not be able to produce 6 different juices a day on my own. That is a full time job in itself! So, I started looking at juice companies in the San Diego area. There was only one company that met my standards… Oh! Juice. Another plus was that they delivered early in the morning for a very reasonable price. This made it even more convenient! My only concern was that the cost would be more than I could budget for. I reached out to Oh! Juice and Taryn and Hanna immediately got back to me. I told them about my health concerns and informed them that I was not wealthy. To my surprise, they worked with me so that I could afford a 60 day cleanse! I went up to Carlsbad, did a tasting of their juices, which are delicious and they put together a custom cleanse based on my likes and nutritional needs.

It’s been 30 days now and I have already lost 20 pounds! My skin is glowing, I have lost all joint pain and I feel amazing! Funny thing is, I don’t feel like I’m fasting. I have more energy now than when I was eating! And, not only have I lost inches from my waist, hips and chest, but I have even lost an inch around my neck and an inch off my calves!

A big part of my success has been the support that I have had; that is key! Taryn and Hanna have been right there whenever I’ve had questions or concerns. And, my husband was so impressed with what Oh! Juice had to offer that he jumped on board too! I know the cleanse would have been way harder for me had he not decided to juice as well. What was most surprising was the support I received from my son. He’s 14 and loves fast food. He would be sitting next to me eating In & Out Burger and I would say; “Can I just have one fry?” “NO!” he exclaimed. “You are doing so good; I will not let you cheat!” He also tells me how amazing I look and how proud he is of me.

  • Interview with Dustin Interpreted by Kristina Silla(OH! Juice Consultant)

Dustin and his wife were inspired to do a 60-day juice cleanse after seeing the documentary, Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. His wife, Laurie has been having some health issues that caused her to gain weight and said he could use a health boost of his own. He lost 24 lbs during the first 30 days of his juice cleanse, Laurie lost 20. Read Laurie’s testimonial HERE.

OH! Juice made it realistic to try a huge lifestyle change like this, the man in Fat Sick & Nearly Dead was single with no children, had a film crew, lots of money and didn’t have to work. “It would be so hard to do this type of juicing on your own. It would be nearly impossible with work, family, activities, etcetera... Making the juice would become its own fulltime job with all the sourcing of the quality produce, superfoods, and cleanup.”

Dustin and Laurie did a mix of deliveries and pickups biweekly to make sure they had enough juice on hand at all times, six juices per day for the first 30 days before they started to incorporate solid foods:

I was worried that the calorie intake wouldn’t give me enough energy, never had a problem, I had tons of energy. I kept expecting to crash and never did. I was also worried about caffeine withdrawals because I had tried to lower my coffee intake previously. I was at 3-4 cups a day. I just had a dull headache one night, no other symptoms.

“You really notice when you put the good stuff in, the bad stuff comes right out,” said Dustin. “Keeping a belly full of water is key for us, it really helped with the detox symptoms as well as hunger” His tip is to keep a big cup of water by your side the whole time. The first improvements Dustin saw was in his and his wife’s skin, as you can see in the pictures,“You don’t really notice it in yourself, but I really noticed it on my wife right away and she said the same thing. Our dark eye circles were gone”

Juicing with OH! Juice was a huge time saver for Dustin and Laurie, “You’re never spending time thinking about what you’re going to eat, planning meals, cooking, cleaning, doing dishes. We found ourselves wondering what to do with all our extra time at lunch and dinner. We started taking long walks instead during those mealtimes.”

Dustin even went on a ski trip with his buddies and lowered his juice intake to 3-4 juices per day and was able to stick to clean, healthy salads, fruits, vegetables and nuts to stay on track during his cleanse. It was very important to them that they didn’t miss out on social events. They even brought their juices to happy hours with coworkers and friends. Friends and family were really supportive and understood their goals and didn’t want to derail their progress.

I really expected to be craving mexican food, but I didn’t really. I only craved red meat and other clean foods, nothing unhealthy. The hardest part was there wasn’t much to help savory cravings. Salted nuts and seeds were really helpful for that. I kept thinking I could really go for ______, but I don’t need it.

After 30 days of juice, Dustin and Laurie rewarded themselves with salads from Tender Greens and are now incorporating clean foods into their cleanse. Their stomachs have shrunk so they don’t need as much food and want to maintain the lower calorie, higher quality intake. Always go into your cleanse thinking you’re going to cleanse for double the time to add foods back in to help maintain your results.

30 days was the right amount for anyone looking to commit to a big change. I lost most of the weight within the first 14 days, so that could be a good amount of time for someone who doesn’t need as much of a reset as we did. I don’t know how anyone could manage a juice fast on their own

  • OH! Juice Guest Blog: On the MUV with OH! Juice

By OH! Juice Client Erin Haffner

OH Juice brightens my day by giving me renewed strength and energy. As a Physical Therapist and Pilates instructor I need to have energy and adequate protein throughout the day to work on my patients and clients. OH! Juice is packed with nutrients and protein. Cookies n protein is my favorite for sustained satiation and Go Green juice gives me the vitamins and minerals I need, especially when I don’t have time to make a salad before work. OH! and did I mention that Cookies n Protein tastes like desert, but it’s healthy

I found out about OH! juice by driving by it every day. OH! Juice started their company at the same time my business partner and I started ours right around the corner. My favorite OH! Juice is Cookies n Protein, because it has incredible flavor and it is packed with protein, hydrating coconut water, ½ a date (so it’s not too sweet) and it has the hormone stabilizing Maca root

My favorite part about OH! juice is that all their juices are incredible. They are packed with flavor and tons of nutrients that you cannot find in other cold pressed organic juice. OH! Juice also gets 90% of their produce from local farms which is amazing!! I also love all the people who work here!! They are incredibly sweet and they care about the product they are creating!

Thank you, Erin! We love seeing you daily for your OH! fix!

Check out MUV for their unqine, personal & private Physical Therapy that includes integrated Pilates and Wellness.

  • Recovering From Surgery with OH! Juice

By OH! Juice Consultant Kristina Silla

Recently I had to take some time off working at OH! Juice to have two hip surgeries. I had some bony impingement and torn cartilage. Don’t worry, no replacement. It was an outpatient surgery and everything went well. I’m already back at work a month after the second surgery. I used oh juice in a few different ways before, during and after my surgeries to help prep and maintain my health.

The week before my surgery, I prepped my body with six of the greenest juices we have, and one of my personal favorite flavors, ‘Go Green,’ throughout the week. This allowed me to cleanse my body of any medicines they wanted me to stop taking pre surgery and to pack in extra nutrients to help my body prepare to start healing.

The two weeks I had surgeries in June and July, I took home 6 packs of juices to help supplement my body. I had my family staying with me and cooking for me, so a lot of it, even though was still healthy, ended up being convenience foods, meals that I pre-made and froze or meals out. This made it easy for me to say, “I want a juice and ____ for breakfast.” It took some work off of my family who was already running back and forth at my every whim while I was bed ridden.

With any surgery comes prescribed medicine. I was on heavy pain killers as well as anti inflammatories. I usually stay pretty natural with what I put into my body, only vitamin supplements, allergy medicine and of course, juice. So you can imagine all the pills made me feel awful. I was having stomach aches, headaches, sinus pressure, mood swings, fatigue ect., from my prescribed anti inflammatories. After being on them for about a month and a half, all I think about was how much I wanted them out of my body. After getting the go ahead from my doctor to stop the anti inflammatories, the first thing I did was set myself up with a 5-7 day juice cleanse to get rid of all the nasty toxins building up from all my meds. Always ask your doctor first before cleansing. You can also call us to get a list of juices and ingredients that we use to confirm all are OK to ingest.

One of my favorite things about our cleanses is that they’re customizable. While the 6 juices per day is great for traditional cleansing, I knew my body needed more energy to keep healing. I planned on doing four green juices per day with a small all organic meal for five days. I ended up drinking three  juices per day and eating a meal and a snack. This allowed me to get an extra day and a half of cleansing in.

By the second day of juicing, I already felt 1000 times better. My energy levels were instantly back to normal and I was no longer angry at everything in eyeshot. As you can imagine, surgery eating can become comfort eating because you’re allowing yourself whatever you want to make yourself feel better. I was craving and eating a lot more sugar than I’m used to and laying in bed for a good portion of the day for a month and a half can make you feel pretty sluggish and bloated.

In addition to ridding my body of all the medicine, juicing allowed me to cut down on those cravings and get back in the mindset of my healthy lifestyle. While I still have a long way to go to gain muscle back to be able to safely do my normal barre workouts, the juicing definitely helped me to cut down the bloat and take off a bit of the weight I put on while binge watching Netflix.

Now that I’m back to work I’m feeling so much more like myself, my energy is back to normal and I’m still drinking at least a few juices per week while I’m working. I really believe that putting all the nutrients and superfoods into my body changes how I feel after seeing and feeling the difference when I’m drinking OH! Juice daily versus not at all.

Are you having an upcoming surgery? Please reach out to us for advice on which juices to incorporate pre and post surgery. We are here to help you have a speedy and healthy recovery!

  • OH Juice Guest Blog: Confessions of a Juice Cleanser

By: OH Juice Customer Matthew Howell

Starting on a juice cleanse journey is a big deal - it's important that you feel in-the-know about what you're doing and what you can expect. One of our customers, Matthew Howell, just went through an OH Juice cleanse and he decided to write about his experience. Here's what Matthew had to say...

First off I want to thank Taryn for all her hard work in making this cleanse work for me and my lifestyle. I would also like to thank Raya who was very knowledgeable and helpful when I went in to pick up my packs. Raya also went in extra early for my last pick up because I had to catch an early flight which they also put in plastic bottles and coolers for my luggage.

I appreciate the both of them going above and beyond. The cleanse for me was fantastic - this was the third time I have done a cleanse with OH Juice and it just gets better every time. Traditionally I would do the classic cleanses but this time Taryn mentioned doing one a little more custom to my everyday lifestyle. I play soccer twice a week and go to the gym four times a week so I really wanted to make sure I would get the right nutrients so I could continue to do those things. We added some juices that when Taryn was describing them I wanted nothing to do with it (Bright Eyes, Surfboard, & Pucker up). Two of them had some type of mushrooms in them and I am not a fan of mushrooms and Surfboard had jalapenos. Good thing she talked me into them because they were amazing. I for one loved Pucker Up - I could drink that every day but I believe those three are seasonal, so they aren't around long,

I definitely recommend doing a cleanse during the summer to be able to get some of those three! This was the first time I had done a 7-day cleanse and to be honest I couldn't even tell that it was 7 days - it went by so fast and I never felt hungry once. I did have a few cravings though; particularly I craved a hot coffee (which was a first) and chocolate like nobody's business, but I was able to fight it off and make it through the 7 days.  I would highly recommend OH Juice and a 5-7 day cleanse to get some really good benefits. Typically I do not have results like this cleanse, but I actually lost a total of 14 pounds. I want to say it had something to do with staying active! I will definitely be doing more cleanses with OH Juice in the future and look forward to working with Taryn, Raya and the rest of the team at OH Juice that helped make this happen.

  • Glowing and Growing with OH Juice: A Pregnancy Story!

Odds are you know someone who is having a little bundle of joy soon (or perhaps it’s you!). Just recently, our very own OH Juice team member, Taryn, had her first child; now that she’s settled in to motherhood, Taryn has decided to blog about her experience and share how OH Juice played a very important part in her 10 month pregnancy journey. Here goes…

We’ve all heard pregnancy horror stories, whether they’re from friends, sisters, mothers and strangers. Well my story is the exact opposite. Pregnancy was a truly magical experience, where I looked my best and felt even better. From pre-pregnancy to postpartum, here’s how I juiced my way into motherhood with a happy, healthy baby girl:

Pre-preggo: After being on birth control pills for 10 years, I decided to stop taking them June of 2015. That July I completed the longest cleanse I've ever done, consuming only juice for 14 days straight; two weeks later, BAAM, I was pregnant! Detoxing my body was the best thing I could have done before becoming pregnant. By getting all my toxins out prior to pregnancy I avoided the next concern—morning sickness.

Morning sickness: It didn’t faze me. I did not feel nauseous once. Tired? Run down? Nope, nothing. I actually had an increase in energy! Drinking just one to two juices per day, I continued cruising with no signs I was growing another human inside of me. Other than the bump of course.

*Advice for expecting moms: when nothing seems appetizing and you can’t hold anything down, go for the juice! Try our Green Routine—the ginger settles the stomach and gives your body the folic acid needed in those beginning weeks of pregnancy. Also try OH! My Greens, packed with leafy greens giving you three pounds of organic produce in every bottle! Juicing is the easiest way to get the nutrients into your body when dealing with the dreadful morning sickness!

Prenatals: When searching for the best prenatal vitamins you always check the ingredients. Well, OH Juice had me covered! By making sure I had a variety of juices – fruit, green and beet – I was consuming all the vital micronutrients needed to create a healthy baby. At OH Juice we also add amazing superfoods that are nutrient powerhouses, packing large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins and minerals. With these extra ingredients, I decided to skip the capsules and use juice as my prenatals.

What juices when: Having a Nice Melons or Repear in the mornings gave my body the carbohydrates needed to fuel me throughout the day. At around 2 p.m. I would grab a green juice (the perfect afternoon snack), and for protein, Cacao POW or Cookies N Protein almond mylk hit the spot and helped fill me up with 13 grams of added vegan protein. Sometimes I would go for the greens first thing in the morning and save my fruit juice for that 2 p.m. hour. When I woke up very hungry I would pound down a protein mylk first thing. There really are no rules - using the juices as my tools and listening to my body equaled success!

Iron Issue: Like the majority of pregnant women, I had to get my iron levels up. Using our Detox Me and Support Me superfood shots, I was able to increase my iron by 12 points. These magical mixtures can be ordered in 16 oz quantity, which I took full advantage of. In just 2 weeks my iron was up. I continue to consume one of my favorite juices, Berry Exotic, rich with beets and greens, with a daily superfood shot to maintain my iron level.

Sleeping: Minus the occasional nighttime pee breaks, sleeping wasn't an issue. I actually started snoring! Having a Maca Mylk before bed helped calm my body down (and also was an amazing treat, which you will discover). Maca helps with hormone balancing and for all you mommies out there – a serious necessity during and after pregnancy!

Cravings: The tastiest part of my pregnancy was the fact that I got to drink our fabulous protein almond mylks all the time (these sinless mylks are high in protein and good fats but low in calories). Needless to say, these were my pregnancy craving. And for all  the coffee loving moms-to- be out there, we have the perfect substitute -- - Karma Latte -- amazing latte taste, minus the caffeine. So drink up mamas! Your mind won't know the difference, but your baby and your body with be thanking you!

These numbers don’t lie: During my pregnancy I consumed around 1,200 lbs of organic produce from juice alone! After a 17 hour natural birth, we welcomed Tanna to the world, weighing in at 8 lbs 14oz! I was able to stay active up until the day of birth, feeling beautiful and strong throughout my whole pregnancy, labor and postpartum. I owe the success of my body to OH Juice and the nutrient dense variety of juices that supported my pregnancy journey!  I continue to drink one to two juices a day, keeping my energy levels up and breast milk flowing, while shedding the extra baby pounds. Tanna is a healthy and happy baby drinking breast milk flowing with nutrients from these juices.

In case you’re wondering, the juices are unpasteurized, raw beverages; however, being Certified Organic and knowing the farmers who grow our produce, I felt 100 percent safe consuming our juices while pregnant. I encourage you to consult with your midwife or doctor before juicing during pregnancy. You can email me directly with questions about how to incorporate juicing before, during or postpartum! We have exclusive pregnancy plans for expecting mamas and I would love to help you find the perfect mix of juices for you and your growing bundle of joy!

  • Let's Talk Fat To Get Skinny

First of all the No Fat/Low Fat diet trend is SO 1990’s.  At least 20-35% of your daily calories should come from fats, but not just any fats, Healthy Fats. Fat is ESSENTIAL to the human body! Without it, our skin would be dry, fat soluble vitamins wouldn’t be available for our bodies to use. This would prevent us from reaping the nutrient benefits and our brain would not be able to function. We need healthy fats to THRIVE. Healthy fats can aid in the health of your heart and even prevent chronic disease and heart problems. Everything is so backwards when it comes to fats so let’s get the FACTS about FATS straight.

Fat gets a bad rep, so let’s sort out the different types of fats. Fat is broken down into two main categories, unsaturated fats (the good guys!) and saturated fats, not always the best choice. Below are some examples of foods that fall into each category:

    “Good” Fats

    Unsaturated Fats:

    PolyUnsaturated Fatty Acids

    • Soybean oil*

    • Corn oil*

    • Safflower oil*

    • Walnuts

    • Sunflower, sesame, and pumpkin seeds

    • Flaxseed

    • Fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, trout, sardines)

    • Soy milk*

    • Tofu*

*Soybean oil is almost always genetically modified, this oil does not come highly recommended by our nutritionists, read our soy article to learn more. Soy milk and Tofu should be consumed in minimal amounts and as least processed as possible or avoided as well for the same reasons.

*Corn Oil is always genetically modified. Corn oil and Safflower oil have an unhealthy ratio of omega 6 fatty acids to omega 3 fatty acids. A lot of these vegetable oils like corn, sunflower, safflower and soy are heated during processing causing rancidity, then treated with chemicals to mask the rancidity.

    “Good” Fats

    MonoUnsaturated Fatty Acids

    • Olive oil

    • Canola oil*

    • Sunflower oil*

    • Peanut oil*

    • Sesame oil

    • Avocados

    • Olives

    • Nuts (almonds, peanuts, macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, pecans, cashews)

    • Peanut butter*

*Canola oil is always genetically modified

*Peanut butter is almost always genetically modified and peanuts usually have aflatoxin on them, a harmful carcinogen.

*Sunflower oil has an unhealthy balance of omega 6 FA to omega 3 FA. Peanut, Canola, and Sunflower oil have the same problem mentioned above with the chemical processing of the oils and rancidity.

    “Bad” Fats

    Saturated Fatty Acids

    • High-fat cuts of meat (red meats)

    • Chicken with the skin

    • Whole-fat dairy products

    • Butter

    • Cheese

    • Ice cream

    • Palm Oil*

    • Coconut Oil**

    • Lard

*Palm oil is one of the healthier saturated fats, however it should be avoided since 90% of the palm oil obtained is not sustainably sourced and contributes to deforestation, habitat degradation, climate change, animal cruelty and indigenous rights abuses in the countries where it is produced.

**Coconut oil is full of saturated fats, however this is one of, if not THE BEST oil you can consume or expose your body to. There will be blog posts to come talking about all of the benefits of coconut oil, but to keep it simple: it promotes a strong heart, a healthy brain, and supports weight loss through an optimally functioning metabolism.

    Trans Fatty Acids

    • Commercially-baked pastries, cookies, doughnuts, muffins, cakes, pizza dough

    • Packaged snack foods (crackers, microwave popcorn, chips)

    • Margarine

    • Vegetable shortening

    • Fried foods (French fries, fried chicken, chicken nuggets, breaded fish)*

    • Candy bars

    • Basically anything in a box, bag, or can!

*These are usually fried in genetically modified canola oil.

All of the foods listed here usually contain hydrogenated oils which cause inflammation and high blood pressure. Hydrogenated oils are factory manipulated to add the extra hydrogen for a longer shelf life and are only one molecule away from being PLASTIC!

Generally you want your Saturated Fat intake to encompass 10% or less of your daily calorie intake (unless it’s coconut oil!). You want to get your Trans Fat intake down to 0! Trans Fats are heavily processed. These fats are factory manipulated fats in foods used to extend their grocery store shelf life (in turn shortening your own life!).

Your body creates its own fat through excess calorie intake, therefore it’s not always the fats making you fat. Fats are high in calories so a little can go a long way, that’s why we need to know which are the healthy fats to get the maximum benefits. Don’t run away from the full fat foods and local, organic, grass fed dairy products, their consumption in moderation can supply you with healthy nutrients and healthy fats.

These are the best fats to consume for your daily healthy fat intake!

    Flaxseed oil

    Fatty Fish

    Sesame oil

    Coconut Oil

Get back on the healthy fat train and see what you’ve been missing! Cut out the bad trans fats and incorporate these healthy fats to reap the benefits! Your body (especially your brain) will thank you!

  • Healthy Holiday Eating Tips

They call it “Holiday weight” for a reason. It’s easy for us to lose sight of our health goals over the holiday season. Frequent eating, drinking, and being merry have a clear nutritional dark side. Other less obvious factors can also contribute to weight gain around the holidays including: increased stress levels, travel, and the interruption of routine. Here are our tips for avoiding the holiday bulge.

    Portion Control
    • Of course we want to try all of the delicious mountains of food that everyone took careful planning and time to prepare. Believe it or not you can do this without having to loosen your belt after your meal. The trick is to grab the smallest plate and put small amounts of everything you want to try on your plate instead of large scoops where your plate is overflowing. A smaller plate automatically helps to dramatically decrease your portion size. You can taste a little bit of everything and always go back for seconds if there’s something you really enjoyed! This also minimizes the amount of food wasted in situations where your eyes may have been bigger than your stomach.
    • Another easy trick is to skip the bread and butter, literally, who needs a dinner roll when you have other delicious holiday fixings?
    • The same goes for desserts. For example, instead of eating 5 cookies try half, or a piece of a few, equaling out to 1-2 cookies total, while tasting a variety. (Only if they are Grandma’s homemade cookies, skip all of the processed, boxed, pre-made, in a can, cut and bake sugar cookies.)
    • If you’re going to a friend’s house bring a healthy dish, this way you can guarantee there will be a healthy option to fill up on.

    Drink Mindfully

    • Drink a lot of water! Holiday food staples are typically high in sodium which dehydrates cells, so water is essential for keeping your cells in osmotic balance. As an added bonus water helps by discouraging  over-indulging at the dinner table. Alcohol consumption will only pile on empty calories and further deplete cells. Don’t risk potential headaches and restless sleep during a fun filled long weekend. But how do you avoid that Holiday hangover? Try this. Take a moment to enjoy that glass of wine. TASTE IT. Assess its aroma, color, and body. Consider the terroir of its origin. Mindful drinking this holiday season can be very rewarding, especially for your waistline.

     Find time for Fitness

    • Maybe you’re out of town and don’t have access to a gym since you’re staying with your Family. Go for a walk, visit your high school and run around the track. In a new area? Look up what workout studios are popular and pop in to try a new class.
    • Get your workout in early before the day gets crazy with cooking, travel, or family.
    • Bond with your family using fitness and help everyone balance out their upcoming calorie intake. Organize an energetic activity to do with your family or friends, backyard football, a scavenger hunt, a hike, a walk along the beach, a yoga youtube video, anything to get the blood flowing instead of sitting around on the couch all day.

Your 2015 New Years Resolution doesn’t have to be focused on losing weight if you are mindful of your eating  and drinking right now and throughout the holidays. Don’t give up on your health goals for the current year! Try and keep these tips in mind, but if you need a healthy restart to get back on track you know who to call!

  • Why you should be using Apple Cider Vinegar EVERYDAY in every way!

Apple Cider Vinegar is an amazing multipurpose product. The process of creating apple cider vinegar starts with apples being crushed and combined with yeast to ferment. This creates a hard apple cider. Bacteria are added to the hard cider to start a second fermentation process creating the apple cider vinegar we all know and love. Unfiltered, organic apple cider vinegar still has “the mother”, which are the good bacteria added to the second fermentation process. “The mother’s” strand contains beneficial proteins and enzymes. This is the best kind of apple cider vinegar to consume or use on your skin. For household cleaning purposes any apple cider vinegar will do.

Balancing the body from the inside out is very important to me and that’s why I love Apple Cider Vinegar. Its extreme versatility allows me to use the product internally and externally. Besides the wonders it does when I consume it,  apple cider vinegar also cleans and detoxifies the outside of your body, including your home environment! There are many different ways you can use it, below I will discuss some of my favorite ways to incorporate ACV into your diet, for cleaning, and for beauty

You can incorporate apple cider vinegar easily into your daily routine and reap the amazing health benefits. When you consume it, it helps keep your body’s pH alkalized. Studies have suggested that the more acidic our pH balance is, the more susceptible we are to infection and disease. Stress is a major factor in causing acidity in our body, that’s why it’s important to try and keep our bodies alkaline as often  as possible. Don’t stress,  apple cider vinegar does just that! It can also help lower blood glucose levels, promote healthy bacteria growth in the gut, and assist in weight loss.  Research has shown that apple cider vinegar acts as a tonic, cleansing the body by stimulating cardiovascular circulation and assisting in detoxifying the liver.

I like to drink a 32 oz glass of water with 1-2 ounces of apple cider vinegar in the morning, it helps me to feel full and eat less throughout the day. Adding a tablespoon into your tea or juice is an easy way to get it into your diet. It is also great in recipes; you can use it in salad dressings, mixed into a marinade, or added to a stir-fry.

It not only clears up your insides, but also can be used for household cleaning purposes as well. You can dilute 1 part apple cider vinegar to 1 part water and use it as a non-toxic, multi-purpose surface cleaner. Because It has antibacterial properties it helps neutralize odors. It is also a great way to help eliminate fleas on pets when diluted with water and rubbed into fur.

Our furry friends aren’t the only ones who can benefit from external use of apple cider vinegar; it can be applied to skin and hair for a natural boost. You can dilute a couple of tablespoons ACV in water and use it as a rinse for your hair. Pour it through your hair and massage into your scalp to relieve dandruff, dryness, and increase your hair’s shine and texture. Rinse as you would shampoo or conditioner. Apply diluted ACV to skin to relieve rashes, even skin tone, and prevent/treat acne. You can even use it to alleviate sunburn, just apply some diluted ACV to burns with a cotton ball and allow to dry, or add a cup of apple cider vinegar to your bath and soak. This will help neutralize your skin. It can also neutralize body odor, apply apple cider vinegar directly to your underarms and let it dry.  This allows sweat to come through and regulate your body temperature, but also will neutralize any odors, and help you to sweat less.

Now go get your hands on some apple cider vinegar and start reaping all of the amazing benefits! Be sure to try our new juice featuring, you guessed it, Apple Cider Vinegar! It’s a pear lemonade with apple cider vinegar and cayenne pepper, YUM!

  • Against the grain- The Paleo Diet in a Nutshell

What is Paleo? I heard I could eat all of the eggs and bacon I want, but I’m not a cave man, how does this work?

Paleo is short for Paleolithic. This period of time is better known as the Stone Age, where humans developed the skills to use stones as tools. The Paleo diet is based around the pre-agricultural period when our ancestors relied on nothing but hunting and gathering as a means for food.

The Paleo philosophy’s health benefits are based around the idea that the human genetic makeup was designed during this era, when humans were consuming these types of hunted and gathered foods. The Paleo diet would not include eating anything purposefully cultivated, grown, or milked, this would include grains, dairy, and sugar.

These are what the Paleo diet deems OK; vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, meats, fish, oils and eggs.

The things caveman don’t eat are grains, dairy, and sugar.

The OH! Juice team has found that the Paleo diet has worked great with many clients. The key is the elimination of ALL PROCESSED FOODS. When you take out grains, sugar and anything else that Grandpa or Fred Flintstone wouldn’t have eaten, you remove a lot of what is making the U.S., and rest of the world sick; trans fats, unacceptable levels of sodium, artificial sweeteners, refined sugar, refined carbohydrates, and antibiotics found in meat and dairy. Another good thing about the Paleo diet is, if followed correctly, while not exploiting loop holes such as a bacon and egg breakfast every morning, you will find it promotes a higher intake of fruits and vegetables. If you’re on this website we probably don’t have to tell you in this specific blog post why we love fruits and vegetables so much. Another bonus of Paleo is that it puts an emphasis on grass-fed animal products. As primarily plant based eaters here at OH! Juice, we still commend others and think it adds to a healthier lifestyle when people chose to eat meat that has been sustainably and ethically raised from farmers who are looking out for both the health of you and the animal.

Another big key to Paleo is that you realistically can’t eat out. I mean you can, but that’s not the core value of Paleo. It’s about cooking your food with limited ingredients. A chicken stir-fry that you make Paleo style is completely different from the stir fry you’ll get at a Chinese restaurant down the street. Your Paleo version stir fry will be made from unrefined coconut oil with fresh (hopefully organic) veggies, and good grass-fed meat where your corner Chinese spot will be made with MSG, sugar, a whole salt shaker, and chicken that was fed a soy and antibiotic laden diet a majority of it’s life. See where “Paleo” can be a healthier choice?

The last point I’ll make about the Paleo diet is that if you concentrate on meals centered around fruits and vegetables, and less on animal protein, it’s a great way of eating. The best Paleo book that I’ve read is, “It Starts with Food” by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig. They explain through their Whole 30 program that the Paleo Lifestyle is more about fruits and vegetable intake. You can see this on their website where they display a big bowl of fruits and veggies with a side dish of nuts, rather than a steak dinner and a measly green garnish. • Aspartame

A lot of people like to consume beverages throughout the day besides water, until they realize all of the empty calories that can stack up from drinking sugary iced teas, juices from concentrate, and sodas. Diet, low calorie, and zero calorie drinks might seem like the perfect alternative to their full calorie counterparts, but once you start to educate yourself about the chemical-laden ingredients inside those drinks, you will be staying far away from diet beverages. What’s so bad about these beverages? The Artificial Sweeteners, specifically the chemical aspartame.

Aspartame was discovered accidentally in a lab by a chemist trying to produce an anti-ulcer drug. The chemical breakdown of aspartame is as follows: phenylalanine (50%), aspartic acid (40%) and methanol, also known as wood alcohol (10%). Some of these components can be fine on their own, aspartic acid and phenylalanine are naturally occurring amino acids, but the way they are chemically manipulated together and broken down in our body is where we run into hazards.

When the chemical aspartame is consumed our body doesn’t know what to do with it or how to process it, this causes excitotoxicity specifically from the aspartic acid, a known excitotoxin.  To put it simply, excitotoxicity is when nerve cells in the brain are damaged and killed by overstimulation (excited to death). Excitotoxins not only cause cell death, but also can trigger free radical production in the body, accelerating disease and organ damage. The methanol in aspartame doesn’t have anything to naturally bind to in the body, so it is broken down into formaldehyde, a carcinogen, which is then completely absorbed into our system. Phenylalanine is an amino acid that the body converts to neurotransmitters in your brain. When phenylalanine enters the body in the form of aspartame, the brain is flooded and the increased levels of neurotransmitters can make you more susceptible to headaches, seizures, and tumors. It is estimated that 20 million people cannot process phenylalanine at all; if they happen to consume aspartame a toxic buildup could occur and can cause mental retardation especially in children. No long-term studies have been performed to show any of the lasting effects of aspartame on our bodies or brains. The chemical aspartame has even been on the US Congress’ list of biowarfare chemicals!

From the nutritional perspective one would assume that there’s no arguing the benefits of zero calories! Sorry to disappoint, but this is also a detriment when consuming aspartame-laden beverages. Yes, they are zero calories, however, they are chemicals. The body does need sugar to function (things that can be broken down into glucose for energy) so when you drink something with artificial sweeteners you are not getting any glucose, the body sends a signal to the brain wanting food because it knows it is not getting something that contains energy.  The phenylalanine and aspartic acid in aspartame stimulate the release of hormones that manage your metabolism, insulin and leptin, telling your body to store fat. There are actually studies that show how people who drink aspartame-laden diet drinks tend to gain more weight because they are consuming these beverages, the body is not being satisfied and is craving more energy.

The best thing to do is to sweeten beverages naturally with dates, coconut crystals, apples, or other whole food sources, as these will satisfy your body with some glucose. Another great way to kick the zero calorie chemical habit is to go on a juice cleanse. We can’t stress it enough how even one day of cleansing can change your palate so you actually crave fruits and vegetables and would be satisfied drinking water with lemon, orange, strawberry, etc. throughout the day. I could go on and on about the detriments of aspartame and artificial sweeteners to your health, but I urge you to further investigate for yourself. Our advice as nutritionists and health coaches is to avoid it at all costs. Check your ingredients and avoid all beverages containing aspartame, NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. Check out our guide to artificial sweeteners here to know which ones are safe and which to avoid.

  • Glass vs. Plastic

Plastic is bad for the environment, for the animals and for the human body- we all know this right? I don’t need to waste your time telling you that all the chemicals leached from plastic do nasty things to your body like mess with your hormones, causing reproductive issues, lower sperm counts and increase dangerous cancerous components. But lets keep sipping…

It’s scary but we still use 1,500 plastic bottles every second in the United States! Does this mean we know its bad but we don’t care? I don’t believe so; I think there are no options given from the provider. For that reason I’m not here to scold you for the plastic water bottle sitting at your desk. I believe the problem comes from above and I’m here to help educate you so you can make a decision from the bottom.

While plastic bottles provide manufacturers with a cheap and convenient way to package their products, these bottles take an average of 1,000 years to biodegrade on top of the health concerns and destroyed animal habitats we’ve discussed. Because OH! is educated, aware and conscious of your health, the animals and the environment’s health; we will never use plastic bottles. We are not about a quick buck, we are about what’s good for you and that is why we’ve made the rational decision for you. Enjoy the feeling of glass while drinking OH! Juice, your body will thank you.

  • Juicing vs Blending

    The Hot Debate

Juicing and blending are misunderstood as the same thing and interchangeably used to describe fruit and vegetable drinks, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Juicing and blending can use a majority of the same ingredients, some work better with one or the other, however the main difference between these two terms is the method at which they are made.

Juicing- Juicing requires a juicer, sounds obvious but to many its not. I get comments all the time like “Oh, I juice at home with my vitamix” “My majic bullet blends it up into a juice” these people are confused because no matter how long or hard you blend whole fruits and vegetables, fiber doesn’t disappear. Juice machines will usually contain a spinning blade (unless you have a high end cold pressing machine) that slices the cells of the produce, extracting the water and nutrients while separating the fiber. The main difference between juicing and blending is that a juice is left as a runny aqueous solution that lacks fiber.

Blending- Blenders are more commonly found in households because they have multiple uses and a lower price point. When you put wholefoods like bananas, kale, oranges etc. into a blender nothing is removed during the process, rather everything is broken down creating a thick viscous “smoothie.” Ice, seeds, milk, yogurt, powders and even juice can be added to a blender to mix everything into one blended drink.

    Which is better?

I’m here to tell you, contrary to popular belief that one is not better than the other. The method at which you choose to incorporate for your meal or snack is dependent on the person. What I can say is that juice tends to be more healing because it’s more concentrated because the fiber is removed which allows more “room” for more produce, thus containing higher nutrient profiles. Many people however including myself like a nice smoothie once in a while with fiber and ingredients like protein powders, chia seeds and ice, items that are less likely to be added to juice. Smoothies create more of a balanced meal, which slow digestion and keep people feeling satiated longer. At the end of the day its all about timing and what you and your body feel up to, sometimes the body needs a rest and craves the flow of juice running through the digestion tract delivering bountiful amounts of nutrients while hydrating the body. Smoothies are a great way to curb appetite, supply sustenance and settle sugar cravings.

    My advice

Juice- Cleansing should be done with juice because it gives digestion a rest and really boosts your body with a big dose of nutrients. Juices can be pricy however when you configure the time spent juicing it can be well worth it. If you are consistently juicing you are mostly likely going to be consuming more produce than you would by blending, so if you’re new to eating healthy this is a great way to kick start and maintain adequate amounts of these disease fighting ingredients.

Smoothies- Blending is great for post-work outs, sneaking veggies in kids meals and can be a great substitute to the guilty milkshake. Blending can be fairly quick once you get down ratios, prepping and cleanup, they can also be a great addition to your current diet. Start with 60% fruit and 40% vegetables; eventually switch this ratio concentrating on more ingredients like kale, romaine, dandelion, mint, cucumber, sprouts, carrots, beets etc.

  • Always Organic & Non-GMO

Companies who say they're "mostly organic" or "when we can source it, we use it" create uncertainty and indirectly say that its not a high priority. OH! Juice is 100% organic ALL the time, if we can’t get it organic we won’t use it, because being 100% organic is a core value that we promise and will always operate by.

Why the drastic decision to be all organic? When we buy organic we are buying into a sustainable system that is safe and nourishing for our customers.  It might cost more at first and it might be difficult to source sometimes but my mom always said it wasn't going to be easy!

So how do we do it? It's actually a lot easier than we thought; we won't use it if we can't get it organic. We change our recipes if needed, but to be honest sourcing organically hasn't been an issue. Don't let other companies make the excuse that organic is not always possible.

When we founded this company the conversation lasted about 30 seconds on how we were going to source. We decided if we live an organic lifestyle than its only fair to provide that opportunity for our customers as well. We knew it could be done so there was no excuses not to.

So does it reallllly mater? Absolutely. A growing body of research suggests that industrial agriculture has affected human health increasingly over these last 50 years. Food that is produced in more traditional ways is often better for human health and the environment because the lack of synthetic chemicals. Organic farming is also more sustainable because the land is utilized in a way that it can be used in the future, the land becomes on giant recycling center; manure is used as fertilizer, crop rotation to enrich the soils and water rerouting to fuel the irrigation systems.

Organic foods have been shown to contain higher amounts of nutrients, minerals and antioxidants, while having lower levels of toxic metals and pesticide residue. Think about it, if it’s in the soil the fruit or vegetable is going to extract it. In organic farming there is more nutrients and minerals in the soil because they haven’t been eroded away with the soil from industrial practices like plowing and poor vegetation retention (weak plants that can't hold onto soil with their roots).  Food coming from factory farms often contains harmful bacteria, pesticide residue, antibiotics and artificial hormones, all of which can be harmful to our bodies! Factory farms and industrial agriculture also impact human heath through air, water and soil pollution. U.S. pesticide amount used in 2006 accounted for 22% of total world pesticide amount used and 25% of world herbicide amount used totaling over 1.1 billion pounds of overall synthetic use. Where do you think this all goes? It sure as hell doesn’t disappear. . .
